Tips for New Drummers
If you or your child is thinking about taking up drumming, there are a few things you should consider first. Drumming is a very fun pastime, but it can also be very frustrating at times. It’s not the easiest instrument to play, but it can be the most rewarding once you start to get the hang of it. In order to work through the tough times and stick it out, it’s a good idea to develop a few tricks and tips that will help you when you feel stuck. Here are a few things you might want to try out as you begin to drum.
Study Sheet Music: This is probably the last thing you want to do when you first start learning a new instrument, but it’s a really good idea. Learning how to read music will help you as you learn as well as when you start playing more difficult, advanced songs. It will also be valuable to you if and when you decide to play in a band, whether it is for school or in a rock band.
Play to Songs: While it is a good idea to know sheet music, it can also seem a bit tedious at times and can set you back if you get too bored. Because of this, it’s a good idea to forget about playing “correctly” and just play for fun. Find a song you like that has an easy beat, and start playing along to it. This way you won’t get bored and will enjoy the learning process.
Get a Good Kit: It’s important to get a drum kit that is well-made and suits you. A brand new, high-end drum kit can be quite expensive but worth it if you have the money to spend. If you don’t, however, you can still find really great drum kits that are used and a fraction of the price. Be sure to check out sites like eBay to see what is out there. Some good brands to consider include Yamaha, Zildjian, Pearl, Roland and Alesis.
Practice Practice Practice: The fourth and final tip is to practice as much as possible. If you are a busy person or tend to procrastinate, make sure to set a specific time aside during the day or week to sit down and practice for at least an hour. It’s a good idea to have a set schedule that you can stick to and monitor your practice. By following these simple tips, you’ll be able to overcome the difficult learning process and be on your way to excellent drumming in no time.
