Tips for buying DJ equipment

by David S Kingston

If you're new to being a DJ, you'll need to do a lot of preparation before you can take on your first professional (and paid) job. As well as a bit of natural talent and a lot of practice, you'll need to get the right DJ equipment.

You should start with getting the right DJ equipment. No matter how adept you are at finding cheap DJ equipment, it's important to remember that you will need to have a bit of money put aside in order to get all the equipment you need. Most professional DJs tend to build up their collection of equipment one piece at a time, whilst honing their skills through lots of practice.

If you've got enough money to buy your DJ equipment, you need to work out how best to spend it. First and most importantly of all, you need to get your turntables. It's a good idea to spend more on your turntables to ensure you get the best quality available, as nothing else you buy will make as much difference to the sound quality as a good set of decks will.

One area you can make a saving on, however, is your mixer. If your turntables are good quality, your mixer doesn't need to be the best available. This can always be upgraded to a better model later on when you start earning some money as a DJ, along with the rest of your DJ equipment. It would be much more expensive and difficult to upgrade your turntables than your mixer.

Now it's time to think about accessories. You'll need spares of both your turntable cartridges and your turntable needles, as well as two slipmats and a pair of good quality DJ headphones. You can find all of these items quite cheaply by shopping around online and comparing prices.

Finally, if there's any of your budget left over, you can splash out on a PA system. This will come in handy for private parties or small venues which don't already have a PA system.
