Evolution Of Indian Cinema Over The Past Few Decades

The time that is considered to be analogous with present day Indian movie industry began in 1970s when the commercial movies became a favored mode of entertainment for the general public and that trend continues today in the new Indian cinema. Though directors like Shyam Benegal, Govind Nihilani and others kept the flame of art cinema alive, the mainstream movie industry surpassed the artistic cinema by leaps and bounds.

The trend of extensive commercialization of Indian cinema did not stop in 1980s and 1990s. With the release of movies like Kayamat se Kayamat Tak, Chandni, Tezaab and Maine Pyaar Kiya in 1980′s and Darr, Baazigar and Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge in 1990′s, the trend of romantic movies held ground. These mushy romantics were often love stories of young couples with a happy ending. Many of these romantic movies were commercial successes and have many box office records to their credit.

The trend of romantic movies continued in late 1990′s and early 2000′s with the release of hugely popular movies like Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham. Interestingly, the art cinema re-emerged by late 1990s as many movies including Traffic Signal, Chandni Bar and Satya received good critic reviews. Such new releases were a welcome change from the love stories that were being released every Friday and had a strong influence on the Bollywood movie buffs.

Several recent mainstream movies such as Mein aur Mrs Khanna and Veer were flops at the box office, and surprisingly, movies with lower budgets such as Dev D have been hits. This emerging trend has encouraged innovative ideas for new Hindi movies’ among directors and producers.

The current trend in the Indian movie industry is to try new concepts and storylines. Movies like Three Idiots and My Name is Khan have been based on new subjects and have been hugely successful. The modern Bollywood movies are bringing an innovative approach towards movie making which is appreciated by the huge number of viewers of Hindi cinema.
