Playing a guitar with no prior planning or preparation to a song is called guitar improvisation. It is an age-old technique and one, which leaves people breathless because of the creativity that can be shown on such a musical instrument. There are many people who would love to play like that, but it does take some disciple and a lot of practice. An arpeggio is a chord with notes that are played in rapid sequence rather than at the same time. If you do not know how to play arpeggios, then you should start practicing immediately.

The above technique is a skill to have when you want to improvise while playing guitar. If you have no idea how to start learning arpeggios, then you need to take some separate classes just to learn the basic technique.

You could also practice playing chord scales. The idea behind this is to help you become fast whereby you simply use the chords in place of melodies and scales. Therefore, the idea is to play a scale with a chord connected to it. You will quickly take to this way of playing and will see how easy it becomes as you progress.

Another excellent way to practice is by using backing tracks. With these, you can become more confident and loose yourself in the music. With backing tracks it is like having a band at your disposal any time of the day. If you only start with this technique then you would have accomplished a lot. Guitar improvisation comes from the heart and soul and the level of creativeness you already possess.
